Pre-Op Diet Day One: My First Meal Replacement Shake

Last night, was not a good night.  I don't want to get into too much detail in this post, but basically I ended up having multiple panic attacks at a concert I had been dying to go to for months. I am beyond nervous, sick, etc. over this surgery, and if the next two weeks are anything like last night, it is going to be a rough road. I do plan on writing a more lengthy post on my emotions and panic about the surgery, but for now I just wanted to give a quick update on the first day of my pre-op diet (video to follow soon).

I had my first meal replacement shake this morning (chocolate), and I am not going to lie...they are gross. Not only do they taste like 'fake chocolate', they are really thick, very powdery, and not easy to get down (I'm currently nursing my dinner shake, and probably won't finish it for another hour).  After a shake for both breakfast and lunch, I finally had some 'real' food for dinner. My Dad fried up some sliced mushrooms (no oil allowed), added a small amount of balsamic vinegar (I am allowed to have it in limited amounts) and put it over some lettuce. It was a nice break from the shakes, but I'd kill for some bread, fruit, cheese, or anything really.

A couple of the people who work at the clinic I am having my surgery (and, who have had the surgery themselves) said that the first couple of day are the most difficult. According to them, I will be feeling amazing by day three (lots of energy) and won't miss real food. Fingers crossed!

Tomorrow my sister is going to help me measure my entire body, and take pictures of me from all angels so I can track my progress on this blog. I'd like to share how much weight I lose, but am trying to work up the nerve to tell you how much I currently weigh (it's a pretty big number).

Thanks again for all of your support.

xx
Alicia

  1. Hey there! I'm so sorry that the first one was unpalatable. I hope it gets easier for you!!! I really do think you should try different brands. I know that Popeyes (not sure if there is one near you) carries them in huge barrels, and as such, they actually let you taste them before purchasing. They have these plastic cups and just add water.

In regards to posting the actual number... if you don't feel comfortable, then don't do it. Post the amount you want to lose, or the amount you lost. You could even do percentages. Perhaps when you hit your goal you will feel so proud that you will want to shout it to the world!

Hang in there! It will be totally worthwhile in the end. Sending you lots of encouragement and support.

    1. Thank you Rebecca! You are always so supportive. Unfortunately, I can only have the one particular brand of meal replacement shakes. I think once I have the surgery I can mix it up. I will probably also have to add protein powder to some of my food since I am vegetarian. Any recommendations? xx

  2. I've had two jaw surgeries in the past which required me to eat non-solid foods for 6 weeks at a time (each), so I feel you on missing 'real' food! I'm not sure if the shakes you have are required to be a certain brand, but I drank Boost after my surgeries and they weren't too bad. Still not as great as real food.. but you can do it! Good luck!

    1. Thank you. I can't imagine having jaw surgery. Glad you are okay now. I have to stick to this particular brand before surgery but I think I can switch it up after surgery. I will keep boost in mind. xx

    2. When the time comes, I find Chocolate Boost to be the most palatable so long as it is chilled. I drink the extra calories one, so you don't have to drink as much. That may be counter-intuitive for the weight loss process, but I'm assuming there is still a minimum number of calories they want you to meet a day? Anyway, I still have several cases in London and you are welcome to try some to see if you like it and can tolerate it post-op. :)

  3. Hey Alicia! I'm so sorry you're not having a good week. I myself have suffered with panic attacks and know how much they can ruin things. I hope you can still look back and say you had fun at the concert! I'm sure the shakes will get easier (I drink a nutrition shake every morning that makes me gag every single time but I know it's good for me!) once you get used to the taste and texture. You chose this road for a reason and just remember why you did! You have so many people cheering for you! Stay strong girl! :)

    1. Thanks Shaylee Anne. Panic attacks suck!!! The shakes are getting a little easier. Not great but I managed to actually finish two of them yesterday. I think I am going to try and turn some of them into popsicles. It may be easier to eat them that way. xx
